Since the beginning of the year, the garden visited by our team in Baixas, in the Pyrenees-Orientales, has not had a drop of rain. Even watering is not possible because the watering points are dry. The consequences are already clearly visible to Denis Basseri, an apricot grower. He has never seen his trees in such a state, as he explains in the TF1 report at the beginning of this article.
Removing fruit to save trees, even this method may not work. “We are already experiencing the worst, we tell ourselves that we will unfortunately have to cut the gardens”, the young farmer worries. In total, out of ten hectares of apricot trees, four can be lost.
We don’t know what tomorrow will bring and if we’ll still be here
We don’t know what tomorrow will bring and if we’ll still be here
Thibaut Margale, cucumber grower
At 30 kilometers, the same can be observed in Ile-sur-Tete (Oriental Pyrenees), where Thibaut Margale grows nine hectares of cucumbers, very water-demanding vegetables. After more than four hours without watering, the plant is already starting to die, so it’s important to catch every drop of water. At the beginning of the year, the farmer invested 600,000 euros in water collectors. But even with 50% water conservation, the future of his crops remains uncertain for Thibaut. “It’s very hard for us to live”he testifies “we live from day to day, we don’t know what tomorrow will bring and whether we’ll still be here”.
- Drought: the sale of above-ground pools will be banned in the Eastern Pyrenees
Visiting the Eastern Pyrenees this Saturday, Agriculture Minister Marc Féno promised farmers that they would be compensated for the losses incurred due to the exceptional drought that hit the department. In addition to this year’s harvest, he also promised to take measures to conserve trees and support agricultural activities in the territory. Today, farmers certainly hope for financial assistance, but above all for collective reflection on water management.
