VIDEO – “It all started here”: dull tights will again be produced in France

The Dim brand announced the transfer to France of almost all of its production, which until now was partly made in Germany.

That’s 19 million more pairs of tights a year.

In Autun, in Saone-et-Loire, concerned employees as well as residents are delighted with this announcement.

Good news for Autun and his region. The famous French brand Dim announced on Wednesday the transfer to France, to the territory of Saone-et-Loire, of almost the entire production of tights, which until then was partially produced in Germany.

The factory, which employs 600 people and a hundred temporary workers, will produce almost all of the brand’s tights. That’s nineteen million tights more than the 60 million pairs produced each year.

“This brings us 265 machines that will be able to run at full speed, we are lucky that we have the know-how and it is important to keep it,” explains in the report at the beginning of this article Thierry Lenoble, Technical Director of the Dim plant in Autun.

“We were in a bit of a hot seat”

What was the reason for this move? The closure of a plant in southern Germany resulted in the loss of 90 jobs. For its part, the Otun site currently has unused capacity and only half of the knitting machines in operation. “The move will cement it. We want to saturate him, explained Dim Brands International (DBI) President Francois Wriston during a press briefing in Autun.

Autun employees are sure they were chosen. “A lot of factories are closing and we’ve been stressed too, either them or us, so we’re pleasantly surprised,” find out one of them. “It all started here, everything was created and the fact that everything comes back here is pretty cool,” the second echoes the love story between Dim and Otun, which lasts exactly 70 years.

“Great Event”

The same terrain in the city center, where we also did not expect such an announcement. “For me, the fact that we are repatriating part of the production is a huge event,” rejoices restaurateur, who points out that “that’s a big part of his clientele”.

Dim was founded in 1953. It was then a small hosiery company producing chic and inexpensive stockings, originally sold under the Bas Dimanche brand. Having become a symbol of “Made in France”, he claims to be the leading French lingerie brand. Ten years ago, the company employed more than a thousand people before several owners changed hands. Dim was sold to American multinational Hanesbrand in 2014, resulting in the loss of 265 jobs.

Haynes sold at the end of 2021 to investment fund Regent, based in California. The latter owns 500 companies worldwide in technology, consumer products, industry and media. In the clothing sector, he owns the Escada, La Senza and Club Monaco brands, among others.
