Alcohol taxes may increase in 2024

Bercy is considering changing the current rules to set the amount of taxes on alcohol.

They can be revalued in line with the inflation of the previous year, just like tobacco.

A similar increase in prices will not affect all alcoholic beverages.

Will tax increases on alcohol affect next year? The media is talking about it. Context and Echo, who spoke with representatives of the Ministry of Economy and confirms that the topic is currently under consideration. Such an increase could be approved in the 2024 budget, which is on the agenda of parliament this autumn.

New Calculation Method

In addition to VAT, alcohol and alcoholic beverages are subject to additional taxation called excises. The same as for tobacco, for example. Bersi’s idea was to change their method of calculation: the tax now follows inflation indexation for the N-2 year, which is 2021 at the present time. Next year, as decided for cigarettes, the calculation will be based on values in N-1. Thus, taxation in 2024 will be based on inflation in 2023. However, it should be noted that the increase in excise duties remains limited and cannot exceed 1.75%.

The meeting was to take place on July 12, which was attended by Mayor Bruno and the deputies of the majority. This was reported by a source in parliament who was present that day. echo track that “seems almost arbitrable.” It is therefore highly likely that this increase will be confirmed in the coming months. In practice, this increase may result in an additional amount of around 0.3 cents per bottle of wine. An increase that could be much more significant for spirits (between 1 and 2 euros per bottle).

If such a change in taxes on alcohol remains the subject of a vote of parliamentarians, Bercy sees this as a source of additional revenue for the state. According to the first estimates published in the press, about several hundred million euros.
