Will tax increases on alcohol affect next year? The media is talking about it. Such an increase could be approved in the 2024 budget, which is on the agenda of parliament this autumn.
New Calculation Method
In addition to VAT, alcohol and alcoholic beverages are subject to additional taxation called excises. The same as for tobacco, for example. Bersi’s idea was to change their method of calculation: the tax now follows inflation indexation for the N-2 year, which is 2021 at the present time. Next year, as decided for cigarettes, the calculation will be based on values in N-1. Thus, taxation in 2024 will be based on inflation in 2023. However, it should be noted that the increase in excise duties remains limited and cannot exceed 1.75%.

If such a change in taxes on alcohol remains the subject of a vote of parliamentarians, Bercy sees this as a source of additional revenue for the state. According to the first estimates published in the press, about several hundred million euros.
