WITH Anatomy of a fall, French director Justine Triet signs a macabre legal thriller, a disturbing deconstruction of the intimate life of a couple and a bemused woman, brilliantly interpreted by German Sandra Hüller. This well-deserved Palme d’Or, the tenth for France and the third for a woman alone, will hit theaters on August 23rd.
Grand Jury Prize, Area of Interest left an indelible mark on the 76th Cannes Film Festival. In this film adaptation of Martin Amis’s novel, British director Jonathan Glaser takes the viewer to the other side of the Auschwitz wall, to the domain of SS commander Rudolf Hoss and his wife Hedwig. Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki received the Jury Prize for dead leaves, or a gentle and parodic encounter between an alcoholic worker and a lone supermarket worker. A poetic tale full of cinematic references and great pop songs, in cinemas on September 20th.
