Six months before his death, in April 2021, Bernard Tapie is a weakened person. Despite his rage to live and all the treatments he undergoes, the disease is getting stronger and stronger. Having suffered from cancer for several years, he lives in his house in Seine-et-Marne with his wife, Dominique. The couple is extremely close-knit, after 50 years of marriage.

In an interview for Audrey Crespo-Mara’s Sept à Huit, Dominique Tapie talks about the attack they suffered in April 2021. In the middle of the night, she wakes up and sees a tall figure in front of her, dressed in black clothes, a masked face, with a flashlight. “I barely have time to react when the pillow suffocates me, and now I think that my last hour has come”, she says. Unbeknownst to her at the time, the four robbers present had already taken possession of Bernard Tapie, who was tied to the foot of the bed. Having received a blow to the back of the head, he falls on his face.
Looking for a non-existent chest
Dominique Tapie quickly understands the motives for this intrusion and gives away her purse, watch, and all the jewelry that was around her. “Then they dragged me around the house to find a non-existent safe”she adds irritably.
The tension builds as impatience wins over the intruders, and they beat up the couple without hesitation. “Leave him, leave him, you can see that he is sick”, recalls begging Dominique Tapie to try to protect her husband. But despite the violence, the businessman fights back with a gesture that could cost two seventy-somethings dearly. “And there, Bernard, you understand what courage he had, he spat in his face … And I said to myself, my God, we are dead”she recalls.

In the end, the attackers tied the couple up and fled. The Tapis then call 911 and alert their children, who take pictures of their puffy faces. The attack was a milestone in the deteriorating health of the former Olympique de Marseille leader. “It really was before and after this attack. Because Bernard failed to fulfill his role as protector.”– concludes Dominique Tapie.
