Hospital: increase in nosocomial infections, 1 in 18 patients fell ill

According to the nationwide survey, which shows that this proportion has increased since 2017, especially if we include hospital-acquired Covid, every 18 hospitalized patients suffer from at least one hospital-acquired infection, namely, contracted in a healthcare facility.

The proportion of infected patients increased significantly between 2017 and 2022 (+14.7%), after stagnating from 2012 to 2017 and falling steadily between 2001 and 2012, according to this French public health survey released this Friday. 26 of May. per day, with 1,155 healthcare facilities, including more than 150,000 patients, every five years.

Covid patients especially affected

The Covid epidemic has clearly affected: SARS-CoV-2 infections (COVID-19) hospital admissions accounted for half of that increase.”. If these nosocomial Covid-19s are excluded, the proportion of patients infected in 2022 will still increase (+7.5%), but “slightly” compared to the trend in 2017.

The Agency emphasizes that “patients admitted to hospital in 2022 posed an increased risk of infectious complications”compared to 2017, due to more vulnerable profiles or the use of invasive treatment devices.

In general, nosocomial infections continue to be more common in intensive care units (nearly one in four infected patients) that treat more vulnerable patients exposed to invasive devices (catheter, respiratory assist system, urinary catheter).

Four bacterial species, including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, are still responsible for almost half of hospital-acquired infections in hospitals, as in 2017. Another lesson from the study is that approximately one in six hospitalized patients receive antibiotic treatment, up 7.5% from 2017. .
