Polluted water in the Alpes-Maritimes: what is cryptosporidiosis?

Is tap water polluted in the five municipalities of the Alpes-Maritimes? In any case, this is what the Paca Regional Health Agency and the Public Health of France fear, which are currently conducting investigations to determine the origin of the cases of cryptosporidiosis detected in recent days. These are at least five municipalities of the Grasse region, namely: Saint-Sézaire-sur-Siagne, Peymenade, Le Tignes, Speracedes and Cabris.

So far, 22 people have contracted the disease this Wednesday, usually by drinking tap water. But where does it come from and what are its symptoms?

natural parasite

Cryptosporidium is a microorganism naturally present in the environment that can contaminate the water supply, particularly after heavy rains. This is the cause of cryptosporidiosis, a highly contagious disease of the digestive tract that is contracted by direct contact with an animal or person carrying a parasite present in the stool, or by ingestion of contaminated water or food.

Typically, the benign disease causes symptoms similar to those of gastroenteritis, including diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, sometimes accompanied by vomiting, fatigue, and mild fever. But it happens that severe forms are observed in people with a weakened immune system, in which the infection can reach other organs besides the intestines.

The incubation period is usually one week and the disease resolves spontaneously. While symptoms can persist for two to three weeks, they rarely last more than a month.

Pending the results of the analysis of the water network, precautionary measures are needed for the population concerned.

It is recommended to boil tap water for two minutes before drinking it and using it for cooking or brushing your teeth, as well as drinking bottled water for the infirm, the elderly and especially for making baby bottles.

Finally, it is recommended that hands be washed regularly with a water-alcohol solution, followed by wiping dry, to avoid transmission of the parasite. Tap water can always be used for showering and household needs (laundry, etc.).
