A few months ago, a new assistant joined the team of doctors at the Gustave Roussy Cancer Center in Villejuif (Val-de-Marne): a robot named Epione. In front of him that day was a patient who had already undergone an operation to remove the tumor, but this was not enough. He still has liver metastases. “Even though it is very small, the fact that it is deep and poorly placed makes this type of treatment preferable. We’re going to burn the area, leaving the rest of the liver in place. Otherwise, we would have to remove the whole part of the liver. liver”, explains Dr. Lambros Celikas, Interventional Radiologist.
Freeze metastases or heat them
For treatment, you need to bring a large needle to the right place. And it is the robot that will guide the doctor’s hand. “He himself will go to position himself in the place he needs, knowing the needle and the trajectory that is predetermined for him”continues the radiologist. In order to calculate this trajectory with millimeter accuracy, the robot is fixed on the scanner images and on the patient’s breathing thanks to carefully placed reflective balls.
Once the needle is properly placed, the goal is to freeze the metastases or heat them. “There will be microwaves here, just like we have at home. We’re going to do 70 watts, eight minutes. Thus, in a total of eight minutes, the lesion will be cured. I promised my patient that we would cure him. and we’ll do it” assures Dr. Lambros Tselikas.

The patient was admitted to the operating room less than an hour early. “Mission accomplished, it’s over”, release the doctor. Only a small trace remains on the skin. “He has just been treated for deep liver metastases with a very small incision.”greets the doctor. The patient can go outside during the day.
The Epione robot will soon be used to treat lung cancer.
