The warning was issued this Thursday on the occasion of World Day Against “Fatty Liver Disease”. More and more adults are showing steatosis on ultrasound, that is, accumulation of fat in the liver, in particular, they express regret to Laurent Caster, hepatologist at the Beaujon Hospital, newspaper Cross who devoted an article to this disease, still little known to the general public. “It is estimated that 10 million French people eat foie gras” As the expert points out, the latest nserm data reports 200,000 French people suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, also called or “Nash” (for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis).
If the disease progresses due to increased physical inactivity, overweight and diabetes, then most of the patients are unaware of this, since the latter can remain latent for many years.
Men over 50 are the first to be concerned
According to Inserm, it mostly affects men over 50 and women after menopause. Patients who are diabetic or obese are also monitored, with smoking or drinking more than one can of sugary drink per day being a risk factor. Finally, young people are more and more prone to contracting this disease, also called “soda sickness”
Experts recommend screening people at risk because early-diagnosed fatty liver disease that does not progress to cirrhosis is reversible. To reduce it, it is recommended that you first review your lifestyle, starting with a diet, consuming less and, above all, less sugar, since sugar, contrary to popular belief, is the number one enemy of the liver, not fat. Not surprisingly, exercise is also recommended because it promotes weight loss and improves liver function.
- By 2040, a 55% increase in liver cancer cases worldwide
As a benchmark, although alcohol consumption was once the leading cause of cirrhosis, NASH was responsible for 80% of new cases of cirrhosis. According to recent studies, the latter significantly increases the risk of developing brain diseases or colorectal cancer.
