The venom pump is a kind of syringe that can be used to release venom from a hornet, insect, spider or snake bite… Thanks to the vacuum system, a small device allows the venom to be sucked up at the bite site. Some people add them to their survival kit as survival bandages or blankets. However, their use is often condemned.

Why is the poison pump useless, even dangerous?
The idea behind this kind of pump is to remove the toxic load from the body after a sting or sting in order to lessen its effects. This gesture is actually a “false good idea”. There are no studies to support the effectiveness of these pumps. Worst, “to suck, you need to press the instrument firmly against the skin, and this contributes to the diffusion of toxins …” says Dr. Magali Oliva-Labadi, head of the Center for Poison Control and Toxicology at the University Hospital of Bordeaux, which involved 60 million consumers. A falsely reassuring gesture, because it extracts only a small amount of poison, if at all.
The pump not only reduces the vigilance of a person during hiking, but also delays the intervention of emergency services. The stung person inhales its venom and pushes back the emergency call, thinking he has gotten rid of the problem.
So what to do with bites?
The Health Insurance Fund recommends that in case of a bite, disinfect the skin with soap and water before applying the antiseptic. Place ice wrapped in a cloth over the affected area to limit the spread of the poison. For pain, you can take paracetamol. After a bee, wasp or hornet sting, a person will have redness: this is normal. On the other hand, if a violent reaction begins there, this may be a sign of an allergy. As for the snake bite, you should call 15, which will tell you what to do next.
