Rebecca is 55 years old and has excellent hearing. However, three months ago, she received a call from a man claiming to have been sent by health insurance, who suggested that she get her hearing tested at home. “She puts the test, and then she tells me that I have a deficit of 30%” hearing, Rebecca explains in the TF1 report at the beginning of this article. “I was very surprised”she testifies “but she tells me that it would be good if I wear a device to fix it and not face more violations in the future”.
She then consults with a friend of the ENT who explains to her that she doesn’t really have a hearing problem and is likely to be a victim of a scam. The devices that were recommended to him on the basis of a false medical report cost 2,000 euros. But she would have nothing to pay, because from 2021 all hearing aids are 100% covered by social security. Finding government money that attracts scammers.
Refunds for imaginary devices
Health insurance is getting more and more reports. Insured persons note, for example, in their social security application, compensation for hearing aids … with which they have never been equipped, explains the anti-fraud manager of CPAM Hauts-de-Seine. In total, several million euros would have been stolen from health insurance. Often this is the work of pseudo-audio prostheses who take on the job without a diploma. One of them was also sentenced in January last year by a Bordeaux court to three years of probation and heavy fines.
- Glasses, teeth, hearing aids, is it possible to combine 100% Health? 8 pm will answer you
The risk for vulnerable people who actually need a hearing aid is to end up with defective or ill-fitting dentures. To avoid the pitfalls, the vice president of the audio prosthesis union advises us, “a preliminary medical examination and a prescription are required, as well as for other actions that are reimbursed.” Within a few months, audio prosthetists will have to display their diploma in their office. For its part, the health insurance emphasizes that it is not customary in its practice to call the insured to offer them a hearing assessment.
