End of Life: College of Physicians Against Euthanasia

After nine months of consultations, the College of Physicians expressed their opinion on the place of the doctor in the process of death. At the General Assembly this Saturday, April 1, the Order shared its recommendations, stating, in part, “adverse” active participation of a specialist in the process of euthanasia in the event of a change in legislation.

What is the role of the doctor?

If active death assistance (euthanasia and/or assisted suicide) is legalized in France, the Order thus said to itself “unfavorable for a physician to participate in a process that would result in euthanasia, a physician cannot intentionally cause death by administering a lethal drug”. His confrontation with “Active participation” doctor “when taking a lethal drug to patients” does not prevent him from arguing that the doctor should be able to follow this patient throughout the entire process.

Upstream, College of Physicians “considers that the doctor should be the professional who collects the patient’s request for active assistance in dying at the end of life”. He also recommends “what is the assessment, the decision on the right to active assistance at death and responsibility” be collegial. treating physician and “referring specialist” must be systematically integrated into this collegial decision, in accordance with the Order.

In the case of the legalization of euthanasia, the Order also requires that a special clause on conscience be introduced for doctors. Finally, the Order believes that “the law will have to protect the doctor who will be involved in the active dying care procedure”. Finally, the organization says to itself “Any possibility of establishing an active euthanasia procedure for minors and persons unable to express their will is unfavorable.”

Under current law Order “considers it necessary to ensure a better application of the Clay-Leonetti law”which prohibits euthanasia and assisted suicide, but allows “deep and continuous sedation to death” in specific cases. In particular, he says he is ready to contribute “toward the development of palliative and supportive care”.
