Senators want to ban Uyghur forced labor products

Many fast fashion brands have been accused of using the forced labor of the Uyghur population to produce clothes that are then sold at unbeatable prices. Environmentalist and socialist senators want to put an end to this and are proposing to their colleagues this Thursday to vote for a resolution aimed at banning the import of products obtained as a result of forced labor of the Uyghur population into the People’s Republic of China.

This resolution proposal does not have the force of law, but if it is voted on, the senators will send a strong signal. They will invite “The European Union to strengthen sanctions against the perpetrators of these crimes and against the accomplices of these atrocities” AND “To the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union (…) to put in place a new trade instrument”, “aimed at prohibiting the importation of goods manufactured using forced labor and taking place, even partially, (…) if the companies concerned can prove outside there is no doubt that their production is not connected with forced labor.”. In addition, the French Government will be invited “advocate at the European level in favor of this trade instrument aimed at banning the import of products derived in whole or in part from the forced labor of the Uyghur population”.

Soon a ban at the European level?

In September 2022, the European Commission submitted a draft regulation aimed at banning forced labor products from the European market, a law that is likely to cover, in particular, Chinese products with a Uyghur Muslim minority. It may enter into force by the end of 2025.

Newly elected left-wing officials, especially in the European Parliament, have called for a ban in France on the Chinese brand Shein, which is accused of using Uyghur forced labor and destroying the planet. A petition to this effect has even been signed 110,000 times on Change.org. But, according to Sandrine Clavel, professor of international commercial law at the University of Versailles, interviewed by TF1info on May 11, it would be difficult for France to impose such a ban on its own. “The text of the European Union should not be postponed any longer, and therefore I think it is more efficient to wait”she explained. Case to follow.
