Not all means of action are approved by the French. In a poll for TF1-LCI released this Friday, March 31, Harris Interactive and Toluna Institute surveyed public opinion about the various operations being carried out to challenge pension reform. If 3 out of 4 French people indicate they approve of operations “free pass”they are more mixed when it comes to operations that use a form of violence.
Blocking was supported by more than 40% of respondents
In fact, 73% of respondents approve when opponents of the reform block toll gates and let motorists through for free. 45% of them approve of targeted power cuts, whether they target businesses or MPs’ offices.
Almost the majority of the French also support lockdown actions. So 45% approve of blocking roads or roundabouts, 43% approve blocking universities, 42% blocking construction sites, and 41% blocking oil refineries to cause gasoline shortages.
Actions in which violence is used, however, are much less successful for respondents. Thus, 77% of people say they oppose the use of firecrackers or fireworks during demonstrations. 83% disapprove of throwing projectiles at law enforcement. No matter what, they are 7% “totally approve” this kind of action. 84% oppose damage to street furniture during demonstrations, of which 65% believe “I don’t approve at all.”

Also according to this survey, the approval of these means of action may depend on the political affinity of the people surveyed. So with regards to targeted power outages, people who say they approve of this type of protest are more likely people who say they are close to La France insoumise, the National Assembly, or have no political preferences. According to this study, regarding the use of firecrackers or fireworks, people who approve of this type of action are quite close to the ideas of recalcitrant France or the Republicans.
The survey was conducted online from 28 to 30 March on a sample of 1,062 people representing the French population aged 18 and over, using a quota method. The error is from 1.4 to 3.1 points.
