In a matter of hours, she went from anonymous to the center of attention. On the podium of the Grande Halle d’Avergne, the new General Secretary of the CGT knows this: no one was waiting for her there, Sophie Binet was not even a candidate. But he appeared as a defense after four days of an extremely tense congress at Cournon d’Auvergne (Puy de Dome), during which neither of the two favorites could reach a consensus.
Former socialist and UNEF activist
This is the first time for the CGT: a woman at the head, not a member of the Communist Party. When she entered politics, it was in the Socialist Party that the young Sophie Binet took her card. She was then active in UNEF, the student union of the moderate left, but eventually joined the CGT, where she rose to the rank of head of engineering and leadership. At 41, the former CPE replaced Philippe Martinez, who had led the union for eight years.
- EXCLUSIVE POLL – Against pension reform, French people favor lockdowns, not violence
Sophie Binet’s atypical fighting career contrasts with that of her predecessor, as does her style. Face of the CGT “Changed, you see, I don’t have a mustache”she laughs during her first contact with reporters. And in general, what are the changes in the CGT line?
If she is in favor of dialogue and travels to Matignon on Wednesday with other unions, she is also already giving her opinion on the mediation requested last week by the inter-union. “Mediation is not on the agenda”emphasized the Secretary General, “Abolition of pension reform is on the agenda”. Some government sources have already said they expect a tough negotiator.
