A solar storm could hit planet Earth and cause disruptions in the coming hours.
The warning was issued on Monday morning by the Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics, located in Moscow, Russia.
Geomagnetic Storm Warning on Planet Earth! Three solar flares on Sunday, July 16, unleashed a powerful Category X solar storm – the highest level on the classification scale for these celestial events – that could severely disrupt power grids and telecommunications in the coming months, the Ferodov Institute warns. Applied Geophysics, located in Moscow, Russia, whose warning was relayed by Reuters.
“If this happens, [les Russes] you can say: ‘You see that we were right ; and if they make a mistake, then everyone will forget their prediction”explains Karine Briand, a research fellow at the Laboratory for Space Research and Astrophysical Instruments at the Paris Observatory and a solar physicist contacted by TF1info. “It is correct that there were three eruptions [solaires] Sunday marked intensity. Two of them (3372 and 3373 in the photo below) could have an impact by being more directed towards the Earth.the researcher adds.
Solar flares, also called coronal mass ejections, eject solar plasma at very high speeds into space, which strikes the Earth’s upper atmosphere and interacts with its magnetic field. Although it usually protects us from these particles, when powerful solar flares occur, like the ones that occurred on Sunday, a phenomenon called magnetic reconnection occurs in the Earth’s magnetosphere. This phenomenon, which usually lasts 24 to 36 hours, is known to underlie the appearance of the northern lights.
It can also cause magnetic storms that can disrupt the power grid and communications satellites, which can then go offline for several hours. Last year, after a magnetic storm, up to 40 SpaceX satellites failed to turn around after their launch and disintegrated upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, Elon Musk’s company said. There are also possible dangerous levels of radiation for astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
- Solar storm and geomagnetic storms: what are the consequences for us on Earth?
The Sun is currently experiencing its smallest period of activity in over a century. However, our star is currently approaching its solar maximum (you know, the peak of its activity), scheduled by the European Space Agency (ESA) for 2025. This favors the emergence of such events, which, moreover, will multiply in the coming months. According to astronomers, solar cycles have an average duration of 22 years: eleven years lead to a maximum and another eleven years lead to a minimum, after which a new cycle begins. But don’t worry, these evolutions of our star have never threatened the survival of Mankind.
