VIDEO – In 2046, a giant asteroid will fly very close to Earth: is it worth fearing a collision?

Last month, an asteroid exploded in the Earth’s atmosphere over northern France. It was about a meter in diameter. The one we are currently charging is 50 meters, the size of an Olympic pool. And, according to calculations, there would be a chance that he collided with the Earth on February 14, 2046.

And that doesn’t seem to bother you too much. “It’s been a long time. We have time to live up to this”smiling man interviewed by TF1. “Well, listen, I’ll drink some wine, sit on my terrace and watch this happen. What else do you want me to do?”asks another.

1 in 625 chance of an asteroid hitting us

The odds of this big rock hitting us are 1 in 625. It’s much more likely than winning the lottery, only one chance in 19 million. Scientists have already managed to calculate several trajectories, and they will refine their observations as they go.

“We’re not talking about a single trajectory because we don’t have infinite precision to know exactly where it is. Therefore, we are talking about several trajectories. As for the decisions that result in a collision with the Earth, we see that the object follows the so-called corridor around the Earth, because we do not know exactly where it will fall, and this corridor passes over the Pacific Ocean and Indonesia”explains Patrick Michel, astrophysicist at Nice Cote d’Azur Observatory, CNRS.

The map above shows possible impact points. This object could destroy a city the size of Lyon if it fell on it. Can it be stopped sooner? Scientists are already working on it. But this asteroid can also move away from Earth very peacefully, and it will certainly happen. But, like our Gallic ancestors, we sometimes fear that the sky will fall on our heads.
