James Webb Telescope captures rare image of a star before it explodes

The new precision gem of the James Webb Telescope. NASA released on Tuesday a rare image of a star 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius, dubbed WR 124, that has entered a pre-supernova phase.

This massive star, 30 times the mass of our Sun, is of the Wolf-Rayet type, a relatively short space-scale phase where some stars eject their outer layers, causing a characteristic halo of gas and dust. you can observe in this image and what precedes the supernova. By this point, WR 124 had already lost material equivalent to ten Suns.

cosmic dust

“As the ejected gas moves away from the star and cools, cosmic dust is formed that glows in the infrared light detected by Webb.”NASA reports.

The cosmic dust caused by this phenomenon is of particular interest to scientists because it could survive the explosion and harbor new stars or promote the formation of new planets.
