Revolution in the field of reproduction. Scientists have published a study in Nature in which they reveal that they managed to get mice from two fathers and a surrogate mother. This is the first time that eggs have been created using primarily male mouse cells.
The method is still far from applicable to humans.
To give birth to the babies, Japanese evolutionary biologist Katsuhiko Hayashi at Kyushu University took skin cells from the tail of a male mouse to transform them into pluripotent stem cells. That is, they are able to transform into any type of cell.
During this process, the researchers obtained about 6% of the cells that lost the Y chromosome, which gives them a male character. They then duplicated the remaining X chromosome to produce an XX pair specific to a female subject. The transformed cells were used to create eggs fertilized with the sperm of male mice before implantation into the uterus of surrogate female mice.
Puppies are born healthy and fertile. However, only seven out of 630 attempts survived, which is less than 1%. Thus, it seems that the solution is still far from being applicable to humans. Moreover, the nine-month gestation period in humans is much longer than in mice, which lasts only three weeks. Therefore, the risk of failure will be much higher.
- Male birth control pills are 99% effective in mice
Jonathan Byerle and Diana Laird, two reproduction and stem cell experts at the University of California, San Francisco, nonetheless named the study“remarkable step in reproductive biology”. This method could potentially be used to save an endangered species that has only one breeding male left. But Katsuhiko Hayashi is just running a program to save the white rhino. However, the search does not end, since this species has only two females left alive.
