Are there homosexuals on your team? : BBC apologizes after questioning Morocco captain

On the occasion of the World Cup, a BBC journalist asked the captain of the Moroccan women’s team if there were “homosexuals on (his) team”.

The question that caused controversy.

British media issued an apology on Tuesday.

This is a question that has sparked controversy. While the Women’s World Cup is currently taking place in Australia and New Zealand, Morocco’s French coach Reynald Pedros, as well as selection captain Ghislan Chebbak, took part in a press conference last weekend before the match against Germany (0-6). On this occasion, a BBC journalist asked the player a rather specific question.

An “inappropriate” question, admits the BBC.

“In Morocco, homosexual relations are prohibited by law”he started. “Are there gay players on your team? How do they live in Morocco?he continued, to the astonishment of Ghislaine Chebbuck and his trainer.

Then the press service intervened, considering this issue. “very political” and those wishing to focus on sports matters. “It’s not political, thanks for letting her answer”, the journalist replied. In vain. The player who preferred to smile immediately moved on to the next question. The press conference continued as usual.

But the matter did not stop there. According to our colleagues at CNN, the BBC apologized on Tuesday for the issue. “We admit that the question was inappropriate”– said the representative of the British media to his American colleagues. “We had no intention of causing harm.”
