The Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) has been alerted to the presence of several falsely qualified welders on the site of an international fusion experimental reactor (“Iter is an English abbreviation.), in Cadarache (Bouches-du-Rhone). According to a May 4 letter posted on its website, ASN was informed as soon as “The current March on the identification of falsification of qualifications of welders” within this research site.
This was reported to ASN by the management of Iter itself. “Detection of falsifications in the qualification certificates of welders working at a construction site”the nuclear police officer told the AFP news agency, confirming the information from Le Canard enchaîné, which will be published on Wednesday.
Re-evaluation of all welding certificates
According to the first elements of the internal investigation of the ITER organization, “13 welders had false certificates indicating certain qualifications required for these facilities”. However, in a state of analysis, “no direct impacts, such as lack of competence on the part of stakeholders or inappropriate activities, have been identified”.
By his side “Iter took immediate action not only to terminate this particular contractor, but to disqualify all welds performed by these individuals and to conduct a full site-wide evaluation of all welding certificates.”– explained Laban Koblenz, responsible for the communication of the site.
Precedent in The Hague in 2021
The only known precedent: discovery in 2021 at the Orano refinery in La Gaga (Channel) “three unskilled welders”, reminded ASN. But they were “subsequently qualified Orano at the welding school in Cherbourg and passed their tests, so they had the skills, but not the documents confirming them”– said the security authorities.
According to the ASN, “The risk of disruption could be exacerbated by the current context of very high tensions in the welding professions, which is causing service provider companies and their employees to face very high demand and executives looking for professionals beyond their usual partners.”.
- International ITER project: harnessing stellar energy
A titanic international project to revolutionize energy production, with less radioactive waste and no risk of a nuclear accident, the ITER fusion reactor faces construction hazards that could lead to a delay of several years. Construction of the site began in 2007. Its operation was scheduled for 2025, but not earlier than, at best, 2030.
