VIDEO – How do the chips, which will soon be tested, work in the human brain?

It’s the size of a coin. In a few years, he could take a place in your head. Neuralink, Elon Musk’s company, recently received the green light from US authorities to test its brain implants on humans after doing so on animals.

To do this, simply open the patient’s skull, insert the chip by connecting it to the brain with electrodes, and then close everything. And in the future, you won’t even need a surgeon to perform the operation, because the machine to perform it is in development.

Superhumans can compete with computers

With these implants, the controversial billionaire’s ambition is to make us superhuman, capable of rivaling computers. According to him, the technology developed by Neuralink could allow a person to increase his abilities and communicate with machines. “People who can’t move their muscles can control their phone faster than someone with their hands”he assures.

The operation is as follows: when you raise your hand, your brain sends a certain electrical signal to control it. The chip, thanks to tiny electrodes, listens to this signal and understands your brain’s orders. Autonomous and equipped with a battery, it can send messages from the brain to the computer using Bluetooth technology, just like a smartphone connected to a speaker to play music.

Write emails telepathically

While Neuralink is the most publicized neural implant company, it is not the most cutting edge. Another American company has been testing its technology on humans for two years now. The results seem promising and less intrusive, the device is placed on the chest next to the heart.

“We did it differently, using the blood vessels that naturally form highways to the brain, we placed electrodes and sensors inside the vessels that can record brain activity.” explains Thomas Oxley, CEO of Synchron.

A patient equipped with this technology who lost the ability to use his hands could telepathically write emails or shop online.

In another example, a few days ago, Franco-Swiss researchers succeeded in reconnecting the brain of a paraplegic man with his spinal cord thanks to a device placed on his head. Result: the man was able to walk again.

At the moment, none of these technologies has been commercialized, but in the near future, people and machines may become one.
