More than 60% of the world’s population use social media, and this figure continues to grow.

Nearly five billion people are currently active on social media, almost as many as there are Internet users in the world.

This figure has continued to rise in recent years, especially during the health crisis.

But this coverage is not the same on all continents.

Established just twenty years ago, social networks have already captivated six out of ten people in the world. Almost five billion people (4.88 billion), or 60.6% of the world’s population, have been active on these platforms over the past 30 days, according to the quarterly State of the Internet Statistical Report. This level, calculated by Kepios, a digital usage firm, notes “a new frontier reached” and increased by 3.7% for the year, clarifies this report published by We are social agency and Meltwater. This is faster than the growth of the world’s population itself, which remains below 1% for one year.

Thus, the number of users of these social networks, “socianauts”, is close to the number of Internet users, who make up at least 64.5% of the world’s population (5.19 billion). However, the report notes that this figure of 4.88 billion “does not necessarily represent unique individuals”in particular due to “a certain amount of duplicate and fake accountsas well as accounts representing “non-human” entities such as businesses, pets, music bands.”. But he notes that social media and messaging apps remain “main directions” Internet users.

2 hours 26 minutes connection on average per day

Usage of these platforms has doubled over the past eight years, as just under 30% of the world’s population was active on them with 2.5 billion users in July 2015. The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend, with more than half of humanity now using social media since incarceration. However, this growth has slowed down significantly since then. “compared to double-digit increases seen in 2020 and 2021”.

In addition, some regions of the world are still experiencing sharp declines, with only one in 11 people using social media in Central and East Africa. And in India, now the most populous country, less than a third of people are registered on social platforms. France had 52.6 million social media users in 2022, representing more than 80% of the population, up 6% from last year, according to We are social. Among people older than 13 years, this figure reaches 94.4%.

The report also notes that more than half (53.6%) of users worldwide are men. “Number fraction” in several regions of the world, especially in South Asia, where “Climaxing in Afghanistan, where men make up 84% of social media users in the country”and where women’s rights have continued to deteriorate since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.

As for the time spent on social networks, it, in turn, increased by two minutes a day and reached a daily duration of 2 hours 26 minutes on average around the world. However, there are big differences between countries: for example, 3 hours 49 minutes in Brazil versus 1 hour 46 minutes in France (five minutes more in one year) and less than an hour in Japan.

Social media users visit more than seven platforms on average, but the US group Meta still appears three times among the favorite apps, including Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook. Three Chinese apps follow (Wechat, TikTok and its local version Douyin), then finally Twitter, Messenger and Telegram. In France, the top five social networks most used by Internet users aged 16 to 64 are Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Instagram and YouTube.
