Autonomous car: Formula 1 (too) can now drive without a driver

They can reach speeds up to 280 km/h. At this speed it is difficult to detect their features. When you stop, everything becomes clearer. There is no pilot in the cockpit. These are the fastest self-driving cars in the world.

Vehicles with radars and sensors

“There are three lidars here. These are lasers that allow you to analyze the environment. Also six cameras and radars on the sides. All these sensors allow the car to make the right decisions when to overtake. and when to perform this or that maneuver”says engineer Andrew Saba.

All collected data is analyzed by the vehicle 50 times per second. This does not prevent a few rare incidents, in particular the overtaking attempt, which you can see in the video at the top of this article. On this day, the Italians won. The excitement is not as strong as in Formula 1 races, but that is not the goal.

“The most important thing is to develop science. We’re trying to push the technology to the limit to see if these systems can run at 280 km/h. This is important because one day autonomous cars will be on our roads and in our lives. will be at stake.”explains Paul Mitchell, president of the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC).
