It’s out of sight, on the outskirts of a small village in Belgium. However, behind a small mound of earth lies the largest power plant in Europe, which we discover in the TF1 report at the beginning of this article. The seemingly innocuous white containers actually contain large lithium-ion batteries capable of storing up to 100 megawatts per hour, the equivalent of 8,000 homes.
In operation for a month, this system is connected to the Belgian power grid. The cost of this vault is 33 million euros. It does not produce electricity, but serves to better regulate what is already in circulation.
Restore and save lost energy
At night we consume little. In this case, part of the energy is lost. These giant batteries allow you to save it for use the next day, at the peak of consumption. Today, batteries are charged and then discharged on average once a day. But if it is not used, electricity can be stored inside for several months.
- The fall in electricity production: what are the consequences for consumers?
Prior to the construction of this power plant, consumption peaks were offset by a much more polluting kerosene tank. Thanks to these batteries, the generated energy will be better used. This system also exists in France, but on a smaller scale: the existing site in Martinique is only used to store energy from wind turbines.
