Stretchy, durable, water resistant, not surprising for rubber, but this one wasn’t made from petroleum, far from it. It is originally a tomato. More precisely, it comes from the skin of a tomato, as explained by Johnny Bogran, director of research at Nantes Laboratories INRAE (National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment).
Replace plastic or pesticides
Every year, the food industry throws away tons of unused tomato skins, which is a goldmine for research. The job of researchers is to dismember matter, separate its molecules to create new materials, as we see in the TF1 report at the beginning of this article. A plastic-like texture or mixture that protects plants from certain diseases. The aim is to limit the use of pesticides as much as possible.

The researchers’ latest discovery concerns flax and could well disrupt a Normandy small-to-medium business that our team of automotive upholstery visited. The fiberglass used so far can be replaced with flax. Local, less polluting, less hazardous to handle and more easily recyclable. It has almost all the qualities, except for the cost, which the industry is now trying to bring down.
