VIDEO – Synthetic fuels: fuel of the future for internal combustion vehicles?

(Another) solution to replace thermal vehicles. As yet little known to the general public, synthetic fuels offer an alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Developed over several years, these fuels of the future are now at the center of negotiations in the European Union. The TF1 20 hour report at the top of this article gives you a better idea of this technology.

In its climate plan, the EU has banned the construction of new thermal cars from 2035. A sustainable solution for the environment, but with an immediate impact on hundreds of thousands of jobs in the automotive industry. Germany received an agreement to continue the production of thermal cars. They can be put into circulation if they use CO2-neutral fuel.

One solution could be a synthetic fuel developed in a lab. This type of fuel can even be created from current polluting emissions. To do this, elements from pollution are first taken from the air and then converted using green energy, such as wind power. This material then becomes synthetic gasoline.

Fuel compatible with modern engines

The immediate advantage of this type of fuel is its compatibility with modern internal combustion engines. Some major automotive brands are already investing in their own production. Their goal is to deliver all the cars of the brand within five years. It’s synthetic fuel “it can already be used as it is. Then it’s a question of quantity. The advantage is that it can use all existing distribution, transport schemes, etc. So in theory it can go very fast”explains Mark Möhrer, President of Porsche France.

In Europe, plants for the production of synthetic fuels will be launched within two years. Some countries have long been included in it, for example, Iceland. For ten years, the country has been producing this type of fuel thanks to the green energy generated by its volcanoes.

In the future, this synthetic fuel will primarily be useful for marine or freight transport, which consumes the most energy. Today, these sectors still lack viable solutions to do without heat engines. But despite the potential of this synthetic fuel, several NGOs are warning consumers that this synthetic gasoline could delay the end of thermal cars and alternative technologies.

Synthetic fuel also remains very expensive: about 10 euros per liter for individuals. To date, only racing cars have been running on this new fuel.
