“Take time to slow down.” Elon Musk and hundreds of global experts signed a petition on Wednesday calling for a six-month pause in research on more powerful artificial intelligence than ChatGPT 4, the OpenAI model launched in mid-March, to prevent “major risks to humanity”.
In their petition, published on the futureoflife.org website, they demand a moratorium until the creation of security systems, in particular with special regulatory bodies, monitoring of AI systems, methods to help distinguish the real from the artificial, and institutions capable of managing “the dramatic economic and political upheavals (especially to democracies) that AI will cause”.
— Risk of losing control?
“Should we allow machines to flood our information channels with propaganda and lies? Should we automate all work, including rewarding work? risk losing control of our civilization?”, they wonder. According to them, “These decisions should not be delegated to unelected technology leaders.”

In addition to the owner of Twitter and the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, there are individuals among the signatories who have already publicly expressed their concerns about unguided AI that will surpass humans. Among them is Yuval Noah Harari, author sapians, Yoshua Bengio, Canadian AI pioneer. But also Sam Altman, OpenAI boss, chatGPT designer, who himself admitted that “a little scared” its creation, if it were used for “Large-scale disinformation or cyberattacks”Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Google DeepMind artificial intelligence laboratory staff, American artificial intelligence experts and scientists, and Microsoft executive engineers.
