On the night of June 5-6, one of the largest dams in Ukraine near Kherson was partially destroyed. Early in the morning, Ukrainians and Russians blamed each other for this explosion, which in front of everyone had affected critical infrastructure. Among the images that immediately surfaced online, some should be treated with caution. We are talking about a black-and-white video, very rebroadcast on Twitter and presented as the moment of the explosion of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, built on the banks of the Dnieper.
Video from the Russian media
If this is a real video of the dam strike, then the frame does not refer to what happened that night, but to seven months earlier, in a completely different context. Its first online broadcast dates from November 12, 2022 at the initiative of one of the Russian media. On this day, the Izvestia newspaper publishes a video on Telegram and indicates that it is about “footage of the explosion of a road bridge at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station.”
This impressive video was quickly found on Twitter, picked up by conflict watchers, as OSINTtechnical where the Kakhovskaya dam is directly mentioned. Accounts specializing in open data are of a formal nature, the explosion occurred on November 11 in the place indicated by the Russian. According to Geo-verified accountthen three explosions are visible: one on the bridge located above the dam, and two “further north”.
- Destruction of Kakhovskaya HPP: floods, nuclear risk… what are the consequences for Ukraine and Russia?
At that time Kherson region was occupied by Russian troops. The latter saw in the dam, in particular, a strategic interest in supplying water to the residents of the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula. In late October, the threat of strikes weighed heavily on the infrastructure, with each side warning of an imminent attack. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Russians were stationed here. “information conditions necessary to carry out a fake attack on the Kakhovskaya HPP”. And probably planned to destroy the dam to cover “their retreat from the right bank of the Dnieper and prevent or delay the advance of the Ukrainians on the river”. Russian troops finally announced their withdrawal from Kherson on November 11, the day of the dam explosions.
Just a “bridge”. Here are the satellite images. The bridge goes over the dam in fact. We see that the upper part of the destruction and there is a small discharge of water. What will happen to the dam after such an explosion, I think only IanMatveev (@ian_matveev) November 12, 2022 can say
The damage from them is now difficult to assess. Satellite images of the American company Maxar suggested that they are far from superficial. The upper part of the bridge appeared to be destroyed, causing a flood of water. Other images have been posted on the Russian side, the 13th of Novembertwo days after the attack, then December 1. Everything indicated that the bridge was damaged, but the metal structures were still holding. According to the Ukrainian website, the road remained passable at the time.
