Russian deputies passed a law providing for an increase in the age limit for military service from 27 to 30 years, since the armed conflict with Ukraine lasts 18 months. “From January 1, 2024, citizens aged 18 to 30 will be called up for military service.“According to this law, adopted in the second and then in the third reading by the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, the most important stage in the legislative process in the country.
This measure will significantly increase the number of potential reservists in the Russian army, while in September 2022 Moscow already mobilized almost 300,000 people for its offensive in Ukraine. The law also prohibits conscripts from leaving Russian territory after the military registration and enlistment office sent them a draft order.
Before coming into force, the text must still be approved by the Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, and signed by President Vladimir Putin, a mere formality.
Kremlin denies new wave of mobilization
In April, the Russian parliament already unanimously passed a law making it easier to mobilize Russians into the army by expanding the ways in which subpoenas are sent. The law also made life difficult for non-payers by preventing them from being self-employed or self-employed, getting loans, or taking control of their home and car.
Many Russians who were required to complete a year of compulsory military service have so far avoided conscription by failing to show up at their official address or by paying bribes to recruiters or doctors.
