ON THE PHOTO – Indonesia: Merapi’s sudden awakening after 12 years of sleep

He has been almost asleep since the end of 2010. This Saturday, March 11, Mount Merapi on the island of Java, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, suddenly woke up in Indonesia. The eruption occurred at 12:12 local time (6:12 Paris time), the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said. According to the authorities, there were no casualties immediately, they established a seven-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater.

In footage broadcast earlier in the morning by local Kompas TV, houses and roads in Tungguularum, a village near the volcano, are covered in ash. At least eight nearby villages were affected, an officer on duty at one of the observation posts on Mount Merapi said in a statement.

The Merapi Volcano Observatory estimated that the plume reached 3,000 meters above the summit, and a lava flow 1.5 kilometers long was observed on the sides of the Indonesian giant.

Due to ash disturbances and the danger of volcanic mudflows, especially if it rains near the volcano, the authorities advise the public to stop any activity in the potentially hazardous area.

In November 2020, Mount Merapi’s alert level was raised to the second highest level in the country after activity resumed.

The last major eruption in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced the evacuation of about 280,000 people. It was the most violent episode since the 1930 eruption, which claimed the lives of about 1,300 people. In 1994, another eruption killed about 60 people.
