Arrival by helicopter for a very symbolic visit. The footage, published by a Russian agency, shows Vladimir Putin himself driving a car for the first time in the rebuilt area of Mariupol. In front of the new buildings, pro-Russian residents are waiting for him to show him their apartments, which have just been rebuilt by the new Russian authorities in Mariupol. Smiles of gratitude on all the faces surrounding the owner of the Kremlin, who pretends to apologize: “We don’t want to disturb you, sorry for coming unannounced”.
The following images, which can be found in the 13:00 TF1 thread at the top of this article, show him in a glittering theater that also feels brand new. A place that strangely resembles the Mariupol theater destroyed by Russian bombing – even if the conditions of the visit of the Russian president do not allow to determine with certainty where it is. Just a year ago, on March 16, 2022, hundreds of citizens took refuge in this fence before it was destroyed by Russian troops.
The city is 90% destroyed
In this martyr city, 90% destroyed by fighting, Vladimir Putin, who hardly ever leaves the Kremlin, is signing his first visit to the occupied zone since the start of the Russian invasion a year ago. The day before, he visited Sevastopol in Crimea, a region whose annexation by Russia in 2014 has not been recognized by the international community.
“He’s marking his territory, that’s clear”According to Russian journalist Zhanna Agalakova, “He says ‘I’m at home’“. This double visit sends a very strong message to Ukrainians and to the International Criminal Court, which has just issued an international arrest warrant for the Kremlin boss for war crimes. The ICC has also tried to test whether the bombing and siege of Mariupol could constitute a crime against humanity, but it still lacks
elements to come to this conclusion given the lack of access to the region.

“Criminals always return to the scene of their crimes…”– commented adviser to the President of Ukraine Mikhail Podolyak. “The killer of thousands of Mariupol families came to admire the ruins of the city and its graves. Cynicism and lack of remorse”, he wrote on Twitter. Today, Mariupol, visited by Vladimir Putin, still has about 100,000 inhabitants, down from 450,000 before the conflict.
