From afar, we saw Tomy fiddling with the roof of what was left of his house. So we went to him. He and his wife lived through what he calls “30 longest seconds of his life”. “We took refuge here. And, fortunately, this part of the house remained intact. It lasted a maximum of 30-45 seconds, no more. The sound of a flying roof was heard,” he testifies.
You don’t have to go far to appreciate the extent of the damage: the next room is devastated. The garden, strewn with uprooted trees, is even more impressive. “Our car is there, under the trunk.”
Tommy lived in this house for 30 years. He was one of the strongest in the city. So today he is relativizing. “We are so lucky. There are many people who died who organize funerals. We just don’t know where we will live”he continues. Some residents survived by hiding in a refrigerator or basement. This is the case of Randy, who believes that the warning came too late. “As soon as we received the warning, we took cover in the basement and the tornado hit us. We had 30 seconds to react, it was very fast.”

Most of the victims lived in the small town of Rolling Fork, Mississippi. At least 26 people were killed in a devastating tornado in Mississippi. Trees of impressive size were uprooted. There is no more electricity and water because the water tower has flown away. It is the deadliest tornado in the state in 50 years. The wind was blowing at speeds up to 320 km/h.
