War in Ukraine: what Emmanuel Macron expects from a trip to China

0

There have been no official visits to Chinese soil since the fall of 2019. For health reasons and political reasons, Emmanuel Macron is preparing to visit China for the first time in three and a half years, from April 5 to 8. Further. A journey he will not take alone, as he must be accompanied by business leaders and the President of the European Commission.

If the visit is for economic purposes, then the settlement of the war in Ukraine will be the central topic of negotiations with China, a friend of Russia.

Military support for Moscow, “catastrophic decision”

“China is the only country in the world that can somehow have a direct and radical impact on the development of the conflict.”recognizes the Élysée Palace, which sees this official trip as an opportunity to reflect on “mid-term solution to this war” and warn Xi Jinping: “support Russia militarily” would “fatal decision, major strategic impact on the conflict”. Recall that last week the President of the People’s Republic of China visited Moscow with great fanfare.

Beijing does not directly support Vladimir Putin in the conflict, but has never condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and recently proposed a peace plan that leaves the European Union skeptical about its chances of success. This text is divided into twelve paragraphs and calls, in particular, for the resumption of dialogue between Ukraine and Russia by renouncing to the Cold War mentality. “We must be frank: how China continues to respond to Putin’s war will be a determining factor in the future of EU-China relations.”, Ursula von der Leyen emphasized on March 30 from Brussels. The head of the commission will participate in discussions with Emmanuel Macron.

The trip will begin on April 5 in Beijing with a meeting with the French community, followed by a state dinner and meeting of Emmanuel Macron, Ursula von der Leyen and Xi Jinping on the 6th. It will end in the province of Canton, where exchanges are planned, in particular with Chinese students.

In the economic arena, the Head of State will not act alone. “protect the interests of French companies”. However, according to Elysée, there will be a delegation of fifty to sixty business leaders from CAC40 and SMEs on the trip. In particular, it will include the directors of Airbus, EDF, Alstom and Véolia. The goal is clear as many French expatriates, including entrepreneurs, have left China during the pandemic: “Ensuring that a balanced economic relationship with China benefits French businesses and consumers.”
